His major research interests cover semiotics, legal translation, forensic linguistics (language and law), discourse analysis and Languages for Specific Purpose. In legal translation, he revisits some fundamental problems therein and understands equivalence in legal translation from a semiotic point of view; in the analysis of legal discourse, he emphasizes the socio-semiotic interpretation of legal discourse on the one hand and the understanding of legal discourse from a contrastive perspective on the other; in legal semiotics, he uses a semiotic approach to understand legal phenomena (legal terms, legal genres, legal setup, legal translation and so on) and therefore highlights the dynamicity and relativity of legal phenomena; in legal interpretation, he provides a dynamic understanding of legal terms, legal concepts and legal evidence from a semiotic point of view, and understands legal interpretation as dialogue between social actors such as legislature, courts, government and even the public.
Dr. CHENG Le, having been a lawyer in Mainland China, is now a postdoctoral Research Fellow at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and concurrently an Adjunct Professor at Zhejiang University and Acting Associate Director and Research Professor at China University of Political Science and Law.
